Small Squares – February 2019

Small Squares – February 2019

February is one of my very favorite months for several reasons. One, it is the birth month of my firstborn and it is such fun to celebrate him and his awesomeness. Simon turned the big 16 this month which was mind blowing. Like, honestly mind blowing. I still remember being in labor with him and now he is driving my car. What the fresh heck? I also love February because it is a short month and makes me feel like I am really accomplishing a lot as the month is trucking along. Plus, I usually feel like I’ve finally got my feet under me by about mid-February after getting my butt kicked by the new year in January. And finally, February is usually a super rainy month here in the Bay Area and you know by now of my great love of the rain. I was trying to explain Leap Years to my youngest two this year and failed miserably (honestly, who came up with this dumb idea for Leap Years anyway?); Google and Alexa to the rescue on that one. Anyway, here are a few snaps from our life in February:

Cherry blossoms in our neighborhood.
I know that we are biased but she is really the prettiest pup in all the land.

As there are every single month of the year, we had a bunch of races for the older two. Sophie had a great 800m and then a 1200m as part of the DMR and her team came in 2nd, meaning a sweet medal! This was her very first high school track meet and both her times and workouts meant the coaches brought her up to Varsity! We are super proud of her. She continues to push herself and drop time.

I threw this very modest carrot(s) into my juicer but not before taking a photo!

I took all of Simon’s race bibs that we have saved (there were 70) and turned them into a feature wall in his room with plenty of room for many more.

Both Suisun Valley and Green Valley got dumped on by rain in February making our hills green screen GREEN. This is by far the prettiest time of year in our valleys.

Simon and I made a quick trip to Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach for continued allergy treatment. He is now up to eating 10 peanuts a day and the miracle of a cure from nut allergies is present in our house daily. Our favorite place to eat in Long Beach is at Nicks on 2nd; we always go there right after his appointment; I make sure to book enough time in between our appointment and our flight home so that we can always make it. We cut it pretty close this last time but we still made it work because we are not quitters!

We hosted a Super Bowl party with some friends. Good thing there was lots of food and we were with our friends because that was THE WORST Superbowl in the history of EVER!
High schoolers need naps on patio couches…
These teens 🙂

Our amazing Simon turned 16 in February! What the WHAT?!?! He got a sweet new suit for church (and he looks fantastic in it and way too grown up), cash to buy a new phone and requested a t-bone with moms mashed potatoes and bacon wrapped asparagus. He also requested cheesecake for her cake this year so we got a regular NY cheesecake AND a carmel cheesecake. Sam took him and Sophie go-cart racing as well. We are so glad this kid is 16…and I will be even MORE glad once he has his license and will start driving himself around!

I used dark wax to antique my kitchen cabinets and I am loving how it turned out. I’m planning a whole post on the process and a few other changes I made to the kitchen.
A girl and her dog :). Sophie tells us all the time that she is planning to take Bebe to college. I don’t think that is going to fly but it is a nice sentiment all the same.

That’s all for February! How was your month?
